(a)Hello and welcome to PirateTV. We are coming to you with a look at the week’s events, we sum up Homecoming, and give you a sports recap.
(a)I’m Willow Glauser
(b)And I’m Juliet Arana
Let’s get started.
We are looking into a few aspects of the recent threat leveled against Englewood High School.
-vo-
The superintendent Joanna Polzin said in a summative email to families Tuesday, QUOTE- At 11:01 a.m. we received a Safe2Tell with another generic threat of an explosive device on The Englewood Campus. Our School Resource Officer was on site and immediately began to check into the report. At 11:23 a.m., she received notification from the Director of Safety and Security that a staff member reported a natural gas smell coming from inside the building. We then communicated to families that there was a possible gas smell and students were being moved to safety. At the same time, the SRO called a “Lockdown” due to the report of the explosive device and then “Evacuate” due to the possible gas smell to the lower field of Englewood High School while EPD and the Fire Department checked the building. We then evacuated all students to Colorado’s Finest High School of Choice given the reports. We reunited families at Finest while EPD and the Fire Department checked The Englewood Campus.
She emphasized… There were no explosive devices found and there was no gas leak on The Englewood Campus. The Englewood Police Department and the Fire Department have turned the building back over to Englewood Schools.
(a)We want to tell you a bit about a process we use here at Englewood when we have a situation that requires information quickly… it’s called RedBag.
-VO-
The lockdown call activates a system called, “RedBag.” These bags with QR codes can be found in all spaces with a door. Some spaces only have the QR code.
Once in a safe space, adults pointed their phone camera app at a QR code on a pack near a door. That activated the “RedBag” on their phone.
According to the RedBag website, “RedBag Radio is a ‘cloud-connected’ silent communications tool that provides broadcast and two-way communication between the classroom and emergency responders.”
In an emergency, like the string of incidents on Tuesday, students and staff can scan the QR code and connect to the silent crisis communication system. It is used for lockdowns and in certain situations, it will be used for holds. Once scanned, the system opens to a window that automatically registers the space or room, and asks the scanner if they have turned off lights, locked the doors and how many adults and students are in the space.
The RedBag information is received by the Englewood School District security team and the Englewood Police Department. One critical element of the RedBag system is its two-way communication feature. District security staff can inform those locked in place what is happening and what actions should be taken to keep adults and students safe. It also allows adults to tell security staff if there is an emergency in the space to pinpoint critical issues during an emergency event. If you are in a space alone, you are asked to scan the QR code and let others know where you are.
(b)Attention Swifties. We’ve learned that Singer Taylor Swift may have made a difference in Colorado, in the number of online voter registrations. The secretary of states office, those in charge of elections in our state, said more than 21,000 Coloradans either newly registered to vote or updated their voter registration online the day of the debate and the two days following.
Prior to the presidential debate on September 10, the Colorado Secretary of State’s office saw an average of 1,604 voter registrations and updates each day in September. During the debate, 1,000 voters registered or updated their registration online. Right after the debate, nearly 4,500 voters registered or updated their voter registration online, 900 registered or updated their voter registration in the hour after Swift encouraged her followers to visit vote.org. That trend continued for days after the debate. As of 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 19, there were 3,906,892 total Coloradans registered to vote, including:
- 1,017,664 registered Democrats (26.0%)
