The students at Englewood High School have a unique interest in shoes with many students owning multiple pairs. This phenomenon is referred to as ‘’SneakerHeads.’’
Do you know anyone who fits this? “According to Huddle Up, sneakerheads own anywhere from 25 to 75 of sneakers and buy one to four pairs a month. Once the symbol of athleticism, sneakers have become one of the biggest fashion and commercial items in the world.”
Senior Serenity Gambrell has more than a dozen pairs of sneakers, “I love matching them with outfits, that’s a big thing for me. I like coordinating because I feel like if you have a good pair of shoes that can go with an outfit, that can make a whole thing.”
What is the cost associated with having an obsession with shoes? “I spent so much money. I bought six pairs of shoes within three months, and easily spent like $600 on all of them,” Gambrell said.
Her favorite pair are some high tops, “I have some white Nikes. The souls are hot pink, and in the swoosh, it’s like black, but when they reflect in light, it has neon green lightning bolts in them.”
Gambrell says the outfit is not complete without a nice pair of shoes, “I see a really cool pair of shoes, like, that’s the first thing I’m going to look at. My eyes immediately fall to the shoes of a person. If their shoes are cool, I always compliment people.”
She gets her love of footwear from her mother who used to work in a shoe store.
Junior Teria Stewart has nearly nine pairs of sneakers, “I have a bigger shoe size, so I’ve probably spent around $1500. Something like that. I’m actually wearing them right now. My black-on-black vans new schools.”
Stewart says she has never been a fashion-forward type of person when it comes to clothes or makeup, but shoes are different, “But shoes, I don’t know, I just really love shoes. My dad loves shoes too, so I get that from him.”
