The Englewood High School cheer competition team is usually found on the sidelines of fall sports, but this week, they are front and center, having won second place in the League Championship.
Senior Arabella Sell has been on the cheer team for all four of her high school years. She knows that when things get tough, she can count on the team. ” It gets a lot sometimes, so having girls that you can count on is just one of the best feelings in the world.”
Sell says the fall season has been a little rough here and there, “but with as many new people as we have, they’ve been picking it up like crazy, and we actually have males on this team, so we have more stuff we can do more.”
The League championship was at Denver Christian this year. Repetition was the key to being prepared, “running through the routine over and over again, fixing any small details that need to be fixed.”
Sell says this senior year is neither happy nor sad, “This being my last year, I am definitely hit with a lot of emotions, but I want to see all my other cheerleader girls do well.”
Sell says learning routines and getting it just right can be stressful, “but I find it worth it the adrenaline rush after.”
The younger team members are excited to be part of the legacy that is EHS cheer, “This year I was committed, so I did it,” freshman Arianna Marcek said.
Marcek said the team was very energetic at the football games, “They were pretty good. Everyone was kind of there, and we got the crowd a little bit hyped up, but it was fun.”
The most difficult part for Marcek was learning the cheers, but now they are engraved in her memory, “Most of them were pretty difficult. I was scared I would forget them all, but it kind of just like stuck in my brain.”
