3rd place win for Dylan Carpenter

Englewood junior Dylan Carpenter knows how to talk a good talk and he can walk the walk. Carpenter won 3rd place in the local Optimist Club speech contest, “I got a bronze medal and a hundred-dollar bill.”

“I went against a bunch of kids in my zone. Each zone for the Optimist club is certain areas (districts) of Colorado. My kids in my zone are from the metro Denver area.” Carpenter said.

The oratorical contest was with Littleton Optimist International Club. “I had to do a speech about optimism. My speech had to be under five minutes and over four. I talked about where I find optimism and what it means to me.”

Speech teacher Lawson Miller says, “this could be you next year.” She urges students to sign up for her public speaking class.

According to a fact sheet provided by the Optimist Club, the Oratorical Contest has become the longest-running program sponsored by Optimist International. It started in 1928. The contest is designed for youth to gain experience in public speaking and provide them with the opportunity to compete for a college scholarship.

The Optimist Oratorical Scholarships are funded by member donations to the Optimist International Foundation and Canadian Children’s Optimist Foundation.  3rd place win for Dylan CarpenterEach Optimist Club is split into Districts.
