Hello and welcome to PirateTV. I’m Danny Tobias.
And I’m Royleighsha Simpson.
It’s a new start to the school year. We are so glad to have you with us.
SCAMS – Scammers go after a lot of people and can target everyone. But you may be surprised to know that the one age group that lost the most money to scammers in 2022 is 18- to 24-year-olds. We learned that from the Better Business Bureau’s Scam Tracker Risk Report. Their median dollar loss was $220. What are the top scams? We dive into it. Bri Martinez has our story.
(PKG)
Who are scammers going after to earn a quick buck? Young people. (sot)
Well… Just about everyone knows someone who has fallen victim. (sot)
Here are the top scams.
The social media influencer. Someone creates a fake account and says you’ve won a prize, but they need your account number to give you the prize. It is a lie. Never pay money for a prize.
Next is the romance scam. You think you are dating someone online, and after a short amount of time, they say they need help and money, electronics, they want you to take in a package for you or to cash a check for them.
Next, sextortion. You send an explicit picture to someone you met online. All of a sudden, they want money and if you don’t send it, they threaten to send those pictures to all your contacts, your job, or friends. First, don’t send these types of pictures and if you do, don’t pay the extortion. They can’t come after you no matter how much they say they can.
Fourth, online gaming in-app purchases. You want to pay for rewards but now they have your credit card. Only do in-app purchases directly from the game manufacturer.
5th- Online shopping. You see a fake website, it is your favorite brand, or you think it is. Don’t buy clothes from them. They advertise on TikTok and other social media sites. You may never get the clothing item and if you do it is terrible quality and not worth your money.
And finally, the Employment scams promise work-from-home jobs, high wages, and flexible opportunities. For example, you’re hired to work from home, and you receive a check for home office equipment. After the check arrives, the scammer poses as the employer and asks you to wire or electronically transfer the money to cover the costs. Once you send the money, you learn the check is bad. You must now cover the money you transferred. To avoid employment scams: Be wary of offers that seem too good to be true and on-the-spot offers. Always do background research on the job offer.

The Better Business Bureau says always take a moment to double-check the information given to you by the person on the phone or online before giving them personal or financial information.

POLZIN
Englewood School District has a new superintendent who took over in July with the departure of Wendy Rubin.
(vo)
Joanna Polzin is in her 9th year in Englewood and 23rd year in Education.
She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Marketing from Marquette University and a Masters of Education degree in Curriculum & Instruction with a Concentration in Mathematics from the University of Loyola Chicago. She worked as an elementary teacher, an assistant principal, and a principal in neighboring districts. Within Englewood Schools, she was the Director of Assessment and Analytics, the Chief Academic Officer, and the Deputy Superintendent. She says her primary focus is student safety and security. She believes only when students feel safe can they focus on learning.
SOT – “The safety of staff and students always comes first because in order to ensure that you have a learning environment where you feel comfortable, we want to make sure you feel safe. Not only safe but also that you have a sense of belonging. Because what research shows is that when you have a sense of belonging, you, thrive, you have friends, you have groups you have people you connect with, and it’s a healthy learning environment. Once we have that healthy learning environment, academics are first and foremost. Absolutely the academic growth and achievement of all students and every student.”
(RDR)
Her favorite part of the job is the students and seeing all they accomplish and grow in their years with Englewood. She is excited about starting a student advocacy group. She believes in the importance of having a better pulse on what you as students need to be successful. You can sign up to take part in the Student Advocacy group, learn more about her, and see the full interview on the pirateer.com.
(WATER) We have an update on the possibility of filters being installed on the water fountains at the high school. The Pirateer journalists have been following this story for nearly a year. The filters may be installed as early as the end of September. Many students have concerns about the taste and smell.
(Vo)
Musty or rusty are the two terms students come up with when describing the taste. The EHS maintenance team says none of the bottle fillers or drinking fountains around the high school have filters. The water is straight from Englewood water. Students are bringing water from home. Some pack two or three extra water bottles in their bags at the start of the day. Superintendent Joanna Polzin tells us the new filters are coming soon and will be installed beside the fountains. The head of Englewood Schools maintenance, Ariel Ramos says bids were done the first week of September, and the filters will be installed by the end of September.
(AIR FILTERS) You may have noticed air filters in classrooms around the TEC campus and with budget issues across the state, you may wonder where they came from.
(vo)
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s Clean Air for Schools program provided free high-efficiency particulate air filter portable air cleaners to K-12 schools and licensed early childhood education providers. The goal is to improve schools’s indoor air quality and reduce your exposure to stuff in the air like COVID-19, and the flu. We have a link to more information on the pirateer dot com.
