History hidden in the pages of old papers
Hidden in a storage closet deep in the bowels of Englewood High school, a plastic bin was pushed to the back wall. It was found when a teacher was moving items around, hoping to find room for supplies. What he found was a time capsule. Hundreds of old copies of the Pirateer newspaper. Some of the issues date back to 1952.
What made news at that time? Construction of the field house, gymnasium and cafeteria. the winner of the recent Jamboree and an open house for Junior Achievement. The Englewood High Times, as it was known at the time, has ads from local businesses giving us a sense of community.
We could run some of the same stories today! There is an article about reckless teen drivers and questions posed such as, “What are changes for your future?”
We will run pieces of those old newspapers here about once a week! Walk down memory lane with us!
Your donation will support the student journalists of Englewood High School - CO. Your contribution will allow us to purchase equipment and cover our annual website hosting costs.

Before construction of the new school began and during the last month before I retired, I filled three plastic crates with old issues of the Pirateer that had been filed in an old oak cabinet. Some of the papers went back to the late 1920s and 1930s. Keep looking. There’s more to be found. Glad you found at least one of them.
