Nutpods, Oreos, gum, coffee, syrup, cheerios, cookies, protein bars, frosted flakes, bread, twinkies, peanut butter, cosmetics, soap, candles, candy, and spices. These are just some of the many pumpkin spice products that have come out over the years and sit on shelves throughout fall and winter.
According to an article in the Auburn Plainsman, pumpkin spice has been around since the 1890s, with the first official recipe for pumpkin spice coming from 1796 when a woman named Amelia Simmons created the recipe and published it. The general craze for the flavor started in the late 1990s and the classic Pumpkin Spice Latte made its debut in 2003 and the rest is fall history.
“It seems like a very fall vibe, and I’m all about that,” junior Kaitlyn Trissel said.
It is most popular around the Halloween season since pumpkins and Halloween is a popular combination. It’s the seasonal appeal that makes it so popular and has a mostly well-received review.
“I like getting the Pumpkin spiced Latte from Starbucks. It is not overrated. It is a pretty good drink. It is mostly this time of year that you should drink it. I wouldn’t drink it any other time of the year,” senior Oscar Ruiz.
Through the years, many products have come out around the pumpkin theme, and some people have lost the positive feeling for it.
“I think most pumpkin spice products like coffee or other drinks or other foods that are usually associated with the seasons,” senior Logan Day said. He thinks the spice products are going too far, adding that the smell can be overbearing at times.
