When you have trash in your hand, do you know which bin to throw it in?
You could assume recycling is something that just happens, but in fact, it takes a major effort on everyone’s part.
Cody Pfeifer (12) says, “With
recycling in action I believe in the long run it will be a good and safe way to keep and maintain a clean Earth.”
According to the website “How Stuff Works” recycling has actually been around for thousands of years. Prior to the industrial age, you couldn’t make goods quickly and cheaply, so virtually everyone practiced recycling in some form. Nowadays schools have a large impact on our environment because there is so much waste.
Recycling isn’t something you should have to bribe students into doing because they throw things away anyway. But do you know what is recyclable?
Recycling and trash are two separate things in which some students either don’t care to pay attention to, or just don’t understand. This is something every student should be educated about or it won’t have any helpful effect in any way.
“Recycling is a great mechanism for our school as well as our planet. We just need to teach everyone how it works,” Said Amber Jimenez (11).
The Significant Support classroom manages the recycling for the TEC campus and needs your help to keep things in order. “This is an opportunity for them to give back to the school and help protect the environment,” says teacher Todd Porter. There are 17 students that collect recycling from classrooms in the high school and middle school.
The collection happens during 8th period every Thursday. It’s not always easy, “We find food, and liquids in the recycling bin and it makes a mess and that contaminates the things that can be recycled,” says Mr. Porter.
Mr. Porter believes students should have more of a commitment to the
recycling process to transform it into more of a habit rather than a chore.
