“I want them to learn to think analytically. This competition is a great start in learning those skills,” said Dave Trujillo, the FAB lab instructor at Englewood High School.

Ten teams from high schools around the Denver metro area competed this past weekend at Dakota Ridge High school to be the best robotics designer on the front range. It’s called, “Pay Dirt” and students take up to 6 weeks to draw out and build a robot. The goal is only that it can compete a task. Students from Englewood High School designed a claw dump truck robot and its task was to pick up different objects and put them in a designated area. EHS placed 7th out of 10 in its first ever competition. It also took home the Rookie of the Year award.

Trujillo said this is a real-world learning experience, “The students did great! The students were able to re-engineer a robot on the fly because of malfunctions. They also made it to the semi-finals. We would have made it further if the robot didn’t break.”
