Heartbreak. Excitement. Anger. Sorrow. These are just some of the emotions that Denver Nuggets fans have experienced in the past 5 years. A team cherished throughout the state by Coloradans and basketball fans alike, “The Nuggets have been really strong these past couple seasons, I’ve loved watching them grow,” said junior Sidney Sitsler, basketball fanatic. “My favorite player is Nikola Jokic,” said Sitsler. Sidney has been following the Nuggets for a number of years and is excited to see what they can do this year.
It’s no surprise that Nikola Jokic is the favorite of many fans. Nikola Jokic has been the franchise player for the Nuggets these past couple of years, averaging 29.5 points, 12.2 rebounds, and 10.9 assists this season. Jokic had won the most valuable player in back-to-back seasons, those being 2020-21 and 2021-22. The Nuggets saw recent success in the NBA with a 2023 championship and several deep playoff runs. Currently, the Nuggets are seeded 2nd in the Western Conference with a record of 19-6, only resting behind the reigning champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder. According to Yahoo Sports, the Nuggets lead the league in points scored and field goal percentage, a metric that measures how many shots the team makes out of the total attempts. However, they came in near-last in important defensive statistics like blocked shots and steals per game, signifying a dangerous weakness in the traditional Nuggets game.
Interestingly enough, the Denver Nuggets have always had this high-octane, unorthodox style of play in their arsenal, accompanied by lackluster defense.
According to ebsco.com, the Denver Nuggets originally started out as the Denver Rockets, named after Bill Ringsby’s truck fleet (Ringsby’s Rockets). Bill Ringsby was a trucking mogul who bought the Denver team as they faced financial troubles, not having enough funds to keep the franchise. They originally started out in the ABA. After rumors of an ABA-NBA merger, the team decided to change its name to the ‘Denver Nuggets’ to honor the state’s rich mining history and to not conflict with the already existing Rockets (Houston Rockets). The name “Nuggets” seems to resonate a lot more with fans than the “Rockets” does with Nuggets fans, old and new. “I like the name ‘Denver Nuggets’ more than the Denver Rockets, says Dut Dut, a Denver Nuggets basketball fan here at Englewood High School.
But will the team see any deep playoff runs this time around? After a heartbreaking loss in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals against the eventual champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Nuggets organization knew they needed to make some moves in order to keep their chances at a ring alive. First, they traded beloved player Michael Porter Jr for versatile forward Cam Johnson. Although this was an aching decision for the Nuggets, it was needed in order to allow more leeway in order to sign veteran players like center Jonas Valincunas and guard Tim Hardaway Jr. for more depth at the bench, something sorely hurting the Nuggets last year. Additionally, they opted to sign Bruce Brown, a key part in their previous 2023 championship and fan favorite of the Nuggets.
Only time will tell whether the Nuggets have the gusto to make it all the way. However, all the pieces of the puzzle are already set. An ice-cold killer of a star player, a strong, healthy, and able supporting cast, and a ride-or-die fanbase waiting for the Nuggets to succeed.
