In the world of High School sports, a lot of our athletes are challenging the wisdom of specializing in just one sport. Instead Englewood High School athletes are embracing the multi-sport lifestyle. Leon Huntington, a senior, shows this by his dedication to four sports. Huntington did cross country, cheer, wrestling, and track. Wrestling and cheer are winter sports and take place at the same time. Many other EHS student athletes follow in the multi-sport pathway. Knowing that playing multiple sports at once can be difficult, Huntington has some tips, “dedicate yourself to sports and commit yourself to it, and it’s just as much mental as it is physical.”
“My schedule is pretty full,” as his packed schedule includes many different activities from day to day. Balancing these sports requires a lot of dedication and commitment, “I would run a 5k and whenever I have a little free time I go to cheer and try to balance both wrestling and cheer.”
Managing multiple sports at once takes careful planning. “Practices and games often fall on different days, which leaves little free time during the week.” Despite the busy schedule Huntington stays organized and committed which helps make playing multiple sports possible.
“Playing multiple sports teaches you discipline and mental commitment,” Huntington said, “ It’s not easy but it’s worth it.”
When asked what advice he would give to other students, Huntington said, “try it,” if anything he wishes he started earlier.
For students at Englewood High school thinking about joining multiple sports, Huntington’s experiences shows determination and support is rewarding even if it can be challenging.
