Team Barcelona has fans all over the world including at Englewood High School
Many Spanish students at Englewood love football, and not the kind played in America. One student who enjoys international soccer says he can’t get enough of the sport.
“Me gusta el soccer porque es un deporte muy fácil de hacer y es divertido,” he said. He added that his favorite team is FC Barcelona. “Sí, en mis tiempos libres me gusta practicar este deporte. Mi jugador favorito es Messi.”
Football Club Barcelona was founded in 1899 by Joan Gamper. The club began after an advertisement was placed in a magazine and quickly found success, winning its first trophy in 1902 and its first league title in 1929. Barcelona became known for legendary players such as Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi, and Ronaldinho, establishing itself as a giant in world football with multiple Champions League titles, according to the website Líbero.
In its early years, Barcelona won the Copa Macaya in 1902 and later the Copa del Rey in 1910. More than just a football team, the club became deeply intertwined with Catalan identity. Throughout its history, Barcelona has served as a symbol of cultural and political expression, especially during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco.
Barcelona’s home stadium, Camp Nou, was built in 1957 to replace the smaller Camp de Les Corts. As the team gained popularity around the world, the stadium expanded to accommodate up to 120,000 people for the 1982 World Cup. Over the years, Camp Nou has been remodeled to keep up with the club’s continued growth.
During the 1950s, the arrival of player László Kubala marked an era of success for the club. Between 1951 and 1952, Barcelona won multiple titles in a single season. In the 1980s and 1990s, Johan Cruyff made history both as a player and later as a coach, leading the team to four consecutive league titles and its first European Cup in 1992.
In the 21st century, Barcelona reached new heights under Pep Guardiola. Alongside stars such as Messi, Xavi, and Ronaldinho, the club won the Champions League in 2006. In 2009, Guardiola led Barcelona to a historic sextuple, winning all possible titles in one year and solidifying the team’s famous tiki-taka style of play.
Barcelona’s youth academy, La Masia, has played a key role in the club’s success. It developed legendary players like Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernández, and Andrés Iniesta, who became known for their passing, vision, and teamwork.
One of FC Barcelona’s most important mottos is “More than a club,” a phrase introduced by former president Narcís de Carreras in 1968. The slogan reflects the club’s commitment to values such as Catalan identity, democracy, and social responsibility beyond just winning games.
Today, Barcelona’s legacy stands as a powerful example of identity, football philosophy, and sporting success, built on its youth system and shaped by unforgettable figures who have left a lasting mark on the history of football.
