The girls’ swim team at EHS has historical and sentimental value that has shaped their future for years to come. Jumping back into the 60’s, Englewood High School started the construction of an indoor/outdoor pool for the swim team, and it was set to be done in early 1967.
Although in 2012 the school board was struggling with renovation costs, due to crafting a new campus, which cost between 1 and 3 million dollars. Along with a bond project, the school felt irresponsible to keep the pool, so it inevitably decided to demolish it, which led to various protests and marches from students wanting to protect and save their pool. But the board wanted to favor new learning environments over expensive facility upgrades, and said they would still support the swim team and their future.
Tracy Lonn, the current coach of the girls swim team, says that if she could change anything about the swim team, it would be to have the pool back, “I really miss having a pool that we can call our own, that’s a competition pool, and that’s not a recreation pool,” said Tracy Lonn. As of now, the swimming team uses the Englewood rec-center for their practices and meets, but the legacy of our once beloved pool will never be forgotten.
The swim team is celebrating its 53rd year in 2025.
