This was always going to be a hard year for EHS boys’ basketball. A large group of seniors graduated last year, along with some coaching staff. In addition, the team has been plagued by illness and injury. But they have bounced back.
Englewood High School is currently 4-3, winning their latest game against Aurora Central 63-38 on Tue, Dec. 16.
A look back at basketballs past
Englewood has a basketball history rooted in community spirit and local talent. The city’s high schools, particularly Englewood High School and Colorado’s Finest High School of Choice, have been central to this history, fostering a culture of competition and sportsmanship. Over the years, these schools have produced notable athletes and memorable teams, contributing to the broader narrative of Colorado high school basketball.
According to the Pirateer, the Englewood basketball team started in the 1920s the basketball scene has seen its share of ups and downs, reflecting the typical cycles of high school athletics. Despite not always being a state powerhouse, the dedication of coaches, players, and fans has kept the spirit alive. Local tournaments and rivalries have provided platforms for showcasing talent and building community pride, ensuring that basketball remains an important part of Englewood’s identity.
Since its beginnings in 1922, Englewood High School basketball has experienced a wide range of highs and lows. The 1922 season was considered a success, despite falling just one game short of the suburban championship. According to the 1922-1923 EHS Yearbook, that team scored a total of 475 points on the season. The absence of a team photograph was typical for the time.
Over the decades, the program has seen both challenging and triumphant years, from a difficult 2006-07 season to an impressive 2021-22 campaign where the team finished 16-6 and claimed second place in 4A/3A Colorado.
During the 2006-07 season, which marked the program’s lowest point, the Pirates finished with a 3-19 overall record and a 1-10 league record, resulting in a win percentage of just .136. However, the team demonstrated remarkable improvement over the years. In the 2021-22 season, Englewood posted an impressive 16-6 overall record and 7-3 in league play, with a .727 win percentage, finishing second in the 4A/3A Colorado division.
In more recent history
Englewood High School ended the season last year with a record of 10-13. The leading scorer, Jonah Singer, averaged 14.9 points per game alongside his twin brother Soren, averaging 8.4 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 4 steals, and 1 block per game.
Coach Stu Howard says the team has come far this season, “Currently, our season has been going decently, although it could be better. I’m proud of our boys and the work we put in on the off-season. I have high hopes for our season and that we can perform at a high level all season long and maintain all the way up till we win a championship.”
In the early winter season of Englewood High School, the enduring spirit of high school sports. Englewood High School, along with Colorado’s Finest High School of Choice, has long been the epicenter of this narrative, nurturing generations of athletes and fostering a culture of competition and sportsmanship. The basketball courts here are more than just playing fields; they are hallowed grounds where dreams are chased, friendships are forged, and the values of teamwork and perseverance are instilled.
Last season, the Englewood High School basketball team finished with a 10-13 record, a testament to their hard work and dedication. Coach Stu Howard, a pillar of the Englewood basketball community, expressed his pride in the team’s offseason efforts, acknowledging that while the season had its ups and downs, the potential for greatness was always present.
Goals for this season
With Coach Stu’s leadership and the dedication of players like Jonah and Soren Singer, the team is determined to elevate their game and make a deep run into the playoffs. The ultimate goal is clear: to perform at a high level throughout the season and maintain that momentum all the way to a championship. The journey will be challenging, but the spirit of Englewood basketball is unwavering, fueled by the passion of
Elijah Ray (29) reflected on his experience, saying, “I like the sport all around. I feel like the coaches have a big impact on how I feel about the game and the sport, same with the teammates. Teammates. I have great teammates out there, you know, always picking me up, supporting me, stuff like that.”
Hector Ramirez, one of the seniors on the varsity basketball team, thinks the season is going all right, “There’s definitely something new due to the new coaching staff.” The coaching staff he refers to is Terrance Jones named the new Head Coach for the 2025-2026 season. He likes the energy but would like to see a higher level of motivation, “If there’s a way I could change it, I would probably try and lift my teammates’ heads up and just motivate them to keep going and pushing instead of giving up.”
