Englewood High School cheerleaders are hitting an important milestone this year, it’s the 100th year of cheer in Englewood High School. The school has been showing dedication to Cheer by keeping the sport alive for decades.
Winter Cheerleaders will be showing support for winter sports like basketball and wrestling. The seniors, coming to the end of their high school cheer career, are remembering all the bonds formed and their experiences as leaders. One notable leader is senior Violet Cuenca Fregoso.
She says it is important to keep up with their academics and attending practices, “I’d say I’m a pretty good leader, and I’m pretty good at making sure everyone’s in check.”
Cheerleading at Englewood High School began in 1925 and was named the Glee club, later evolving into the Pep club in 1929 before combining and becoming the cheer squad that we know today.

The cheer team is showing appreciation for their male cheerleaders who work hard and help with risky stunts, and help make the team better.
Sophomore Arianna Marcek has a love for the team and prefers winter cheer over fall, “definitely cheering in the winter. I think it’s very beautiful, and when we do football season, we have to stay out in the cold; it’s cold, but with winter cheer, we get to be in basketball, so we get to be inside.”

The cheer team works together and uses specific techniques when things get too stressful. Cheer coach Ginger Rode tells them to take deep breaths and try not to rush anything.
Recently, Winter Cheer took a trip to the Denver Coliseum for the state competition. The cheer team was on the A mat, moving up divisions to 4A and 5A. This means they competed at a higher level. Athletes say they had a strong routine but fell just short of placing. Next, the winter cheer team will be on hand at basketball and wrestling events.
